This study examined a complementary or oppositional relationship between psy-choanalysis and autobiography/biography as literary genre by comparing the works of Sigmund Freud(1856-1939) and Lou Andreas-Salome(1861-1937), a writer and his coworker, in the Psychoanalytic Movement. In addition, taking account of Freudian theories of memory, the study investigated whether psychoanalysis enabled both writers to transform a "narrative of life." Freud was skeptical about the nature of an autobiography, which is traditionally associated with a linearly evolving life story of an outstanding individual. He was less interested in writing his own autobiography, sug-gesting that the psychological studies of infantile memories included in autobiograph-ical works are much more important. In contrast, Andreas-Salome used various genres in autobiographical writing, such as psychoanalytic theoretical essays, novels, and autobiographies. She gave her own childhood memories a multilayered representation and transfigured them into a universal memory that should be shared by all.

In the period of four years we held nine research meetings with 63 reports in total. The themes of the repoirts were :
・about the memory and the human body
・about the media of the memory and the relation between media and the memory
・about the mass memory and the cultural identity
・about the memory and the consciousness, the memory and the unconsciousness, the memory and the oblivion
・about the memory and the pain
The objects of these analyses were the works of Holderlin, Nietzsche, Rilke, Kafka, Benjamin, Freud, Lessing, Thomas Mann, Goethe and Grillparzer.
We found out that there are a lot of synonyms of the word "memory" in German, and there are series of memories expressed in German literature. Memory primarily originates in the past time incidents, but the memory expressed in literature involves the different time concepts from the usual linear time concept stretching from the past to the future. It also became clear that although the memory is originally an individual matter, it tends to expand when it is kept by many people and it easily develops into the mass history.
Especially the memory of pain is not forgettable for the individuals and for the society. In literary texts we find various types of the memory of pain like consecration, mystification and perversion.
For the further study It seems promising to try to analyze various expressions in German literature from the viewpoint of the cultural factor 'pain'. -

In 1998 and 1999 there were so many big turning point for the research of guide, in German Literature, like the special title in. Zeitschrift fur Germanistik" (Nr 1, 1999) or the Asian Germanist Congress in Fukuoka, in August 1999. Prof.Ingc Stephan was invited to the gender section of this congress there of the research project members have participated the section. In Kyoto an international symposium has been held in February 1999 and 2000, and they gave also very good * to exchange information and to discuss.
Within the project we has a meeting in July 1998. March 1999 and December 1999 and invited guests (Prof. Jaquline Bernd and Dr.Marlene Streeruwitz) to special lectures. -

19世紀末ドイツの女性作家ル-・アンドレアス=ザロメ(1861-1937)は小説などの文学作品だけでなく、劇評、宗教心理学、精神分析、女性論などの諸分野で著作を残したが、特にその理論的著作や思想を再評価する試みはまだ始まったばかりである。近年急速に発展したジェンダー論、およびフロイト精神分析の発展史・精神分析理論批判などの新しい研究成果に関連づけると、アンドレアス=ザロメは芸術・学問分野におけるジェンダー化の問題をすでにはっきり認識していた。芸術家=より高度に分化した人間=近代的主体=意識・精神=男性というイメージの系列に対応して、非芸術家=ディレッタント=未分化な人間=自然・混沌・身体・無意識=女性というイメージの連鎖が、彼女のテクストには繰り返し現われる。これを男性/女性の性別役割を固定する論議だとして彼女を批判する立場もあるが、彼女はむしろ、男性的主体に規程された芸術・学問領域における女性(女性的なもの)の抑圧を問題化し、男女の非対称な関係を明らかにすることで、男女平等主義の限界と矛盾を視野に入れた今日的フェミニズムへの端緒を開いている。アンドレアス=ザロメの主要概念「女性」「エロティク」「ナルシシズム」はいずれも、精神/身体の分断によって成立する主体が、生の統一的全体へと立ち戻るための「契機」を指し示しており、芸術家はその契機を通じて、創造の源泉である無意識に触れ、そこから精神力によって作品を完成させるのだが、こうした図式的に過ぎる芸術創造の説明は、狭義の芸術(男性的主体に規程された芸術)に関わるものである。アンドレアス=ザロメは晩年に書き下ろした自伝「人生回顧」にみられるような、文学か理論的著作かというジャンル分けを拒む、個人的体験と普遍的人間性を分かちがたく表現する書き物・エクリチュールを実践することで、(芸術とは定義されない)女性的芸術の可能性を示していた。
