・本研究は中世イングランドにおいて作成された物語(中英語ロマンス)に登場する「サラセン」の表象を対象としながら、当時の書き手や聴衆とは様々な理由から「異なる」グループに属すると考えられていた人々が、どのように表現され、理解されていたのかを明らかにすることを目指すものである。
・プロジェクトの2年目である令和3年度は、前年度に発表した研究論文の中で分析した西洋世界における人種観の発展の歴史を踏まえながら、13世紀から14世紀に英語で執筆された物語作品において宗教的他者（異教徒、異端など）の改宗と共同体への同化がどのように描き出されているかという問題について考察した。
・初年度である令和２年度には中世における「人種」という観点から中世イングランドにおける宗教的他者の表象を分析し、中世の人間集団を分かつ最大の指標である「宗教」は、現在の我々が「人種」に属すると考える身体的特徴や遺伝的性質などと結び付けられていたという事実を指摘したが、令和3年度には同時代のキリスト教世界における宗教的文脈の中での「自他の区分」という側面に注目しながら、異教徒の改宗を扱う物語に対する分析を行なった。この分析を通して、中世ヨーロッパにおいて一枚岩であったとしばしば想像されるキリスト教世界が、実際には帰属の曖昧な存在や潜在的な対立構造を内部に含むものであり、そのため新たに改宗を通して共同体に同化した個人は自らのアイデンティティを証明するため不断の努力を求められることになるという事実を指摘した。これまでの研究成果は信州大学人文科学論集（第９号）の中で、「中英語ロマンスにおける異教徒の改宗と信仰の証明」として発表している。
