The goal of this project is to conduct a diachronic study on the Ancient Maya, the Aztecs, ethnohistory, and ethnography, related to environmental changes. Kazuo Aoyama carried out archaeological investigations on the rise and fall of Maya civilization by means of stratigraphic excavations and artifact analysis from Ceibal, Guatemala. Mutsumi Izeki studied the Aztec Kingdom by means of archaeology and material culture. Yukitaka Inoue conducted historical study on the continuity and transformation of the landscape concept among the Nahua based on ethnohistorical documents. Yuko Honya carried out a diachronic study on the creation and transformation of a transnational Maya image and conducted ethnographic research on the modern Maya living in Guatemala, Mexico and the US, focusing on textiles as traditional craft production and touristic items. Etsuo Hasegawa conducted archaeological investigations in Nicaragua and collected new archeological data.
