    This study offers a conceptual review of the symbolic dimensions of privacy protection behaviours (PPBs) in social media communication, drawing on interactionist frameworks, particularly those of Blumer and Goffman. It fur- ther investigates the fundamental characteristics of these symbolic aspects through evidence gathered from semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire survey. The findings indicate that the symbolic framing of explicit PPBs is asso- ciated with the emergence of potentially undesirable self-impressions—such as appearing overly preoccupied with privacy—which, in turn, may inhibit the adoption of such behaviours.

    A new industrial revolution is transforming nearly all sectors. One of the most strategic is mobility, where AI plays a key role by enabling connected and autonomous vehicles. AI is now widely adopted—75% of employees already use it—but firms may misinterpret its outputs or overlook opportunities due to its limitations. This chapter explores bias in generative AI applied to mobility, focusing on economic-geographical bias, business model bias, and representation bias. The methodology is novel, employing and comparing responses from three AIs—ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini. Findings reveal inclusion-related biases, a focus on efficiency and Industry 4.0 logic over Industry 5.0 values, and underrepresentation of key regions and sustainable models. Results suggest AI and ethics should be addressed as Dynamic Capabilities that shape competitive advantage. Yet, without critical oversight, AI may hinder long-term strategies and reinforce exclusion. Practical implications urge ethical, inclusive, and context-aware use of AI for fair, human-centric mobility systems.

    This chapter deals with the ethical issues relevant to body modification with cyborg technologies such as wearables and implantables and other aspects of transhumanism, taking Japanese culture into consideration. We are now at the threshold of the potential widespread use of these cyborg technologies. This means that we are at a good point to proactively address the ethical and social issues that the development and usage of these technologies could cause. To clarify such issues, interviews with experts in various fields were conducted, and the results of these interviews are analysed, taking transhumanist ideals and Japanese culture regarding body modification (including piercing, tattooing and organ transplants) into account. As a result, 44 research agenda points were elicited, which fall into eight categories. In addition, British and Spanish perspectives on body modification are discussed to relativise and clarify the Japanese sociocultural circumstances surrounding it.

    This study attempts to build a first step for considering performative effects of zone design study. Firstly, studies on zone design are categorized into three groups: science of zone design, zone design science and science for zone design. Then, the possible performativity of each study group is characterized based on the three types of emergence mechanism of performativity discussed in the context of marketing studies: direct recommendation of decision making and behavior, creation of shared perception framework and construction of research dogma. Lastly, limitations of this study and future research directions are briefly discussed.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate how ordinary Japanese people perceive and understand data sensitivity and sensitive data. Using empirical data acquired through a questionnaire survey and appropriate statistical methods, we sought to clarify empirically the features of data sensitivity as perceived by ordinary Japanese people. This exploratory research revealed that ordinary Japanese tended to feel relatively low sensitivity to personal data related to their civic activities, which are typically mentioned in the official explanation of sensitive data, but they tended to feel a higher degree of sensitivity regarding financial-related personal data, which were not ordinarily considered sensitive data.

    Purpose: A survey of the attitudes of students in eight countries towards the revelations of mass surveillance by the US&#039; NSA and the UK&#039;s GCHQ has been described in an introductory paper and seven country-specific papers (The People&#039;s Republic of China and Taiwan are combined in a single paper). This paper aims to present a comparison of the results from these countries and draws conclusions about the similarities and differences noted.<br />
    <br />
    Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire was deployed in Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, The People&#039;s Republic of China, Spain, Sweden and Taiwan. The original survey was in English, translated into German, Japanese and Chinese for relevant countries. The survey consists of a combination of Likert scale, Yes/no and free-text responses. The results are quantitatively analysed using appropriate statistical tools and the qualitative answers are interpreted (including, where appropriate, consolidated into quantitative results).<br />
    <br />
    Findings: There are significant differences between respondents in the countries surveyed with respect to their general privacy attitudes and their willingness to follow Snowden&#039;s lead, even where they believe his act

    This study deals with young people's attitudes towards and social acceptance of "cyborg technology" including wearables and insideables (or implantable devices) to enhance human ability in Japan as part of the international research project on cyborg ethics, taking Japanese socio-cultural characteristics surrounding cyborg technology into consideration. Those subjects were investigated through questionnaire surveys of Japanese university students, which were conducted in November and December 2016. The survey results demonstrated respondents' relatively low resistance to using wearables and insideables to improve human physical ability and intellectual power. On the other hand, the morality of insideables was questioned by respondents. In various aspects, statistically significant differences in attitudes towards the technologies between genders were detected.

    The purpose of this article is to empirically examine affective reactions of consumers to inter-firm sharing of their use-context data in value co-creation (VCC) settings. Reviewing literatures on VCC based marketing and discussing ethical dimensions of inter-firm data sharing in VCC, empirical data were analyzed to compare degrees of consumer-perceived discomfort in the three data use situations (i.e. internal utilization, inter-firm data sharing for VCC and transfer to third parties outside the VCC). The results indicated that, for reducing the discomfort level of consumers, firms should clarify consumers' merits of inter-firm sharing of consumer data and communicate them to the consumers.

    The authors conducted questionnaire and interview surveys of university students on attitudes towards Edward Snowden's revelations of the NSA's indiscriminate mass surveillance programmes as part of their SIGINT activities, which were started in June 2013, in eight countries including Japan in October and November 2014. The survey results demonstrates that Japanese youngsters are the outliers amongst those studied internationally in terms of social attitudes towards state surveillance. In this research, the authors show the characteristics of those attitudes in Japan, where a highly networked information society has been built, based on the survey outcomes, and examine their meaning for privacy protection, individual freedom and autonomy and democracy in Japanese society taking the Japanese socio-cultural and political environment surrounding privacy and state surveillance into account.

    The purposes of this study are to examine the influence of companies' usage of “context of use” data on consumers' perceived unpleasantness and to give an outline of the emergent ethical problem related to marketing research. The result of statistical analysis on survey data shows that the way of data use tends to have an effect on the level of unpleasantness perceived by consumers; in particular, provision of the data to a third-party company fairly increases the level of the perceived unpleasantness; and a previous notice of provision and level of trust of the third-party seem to moderate increasing of unpleasantness. As IoT makes companies know how consumers use their products on a real-time basis, these findings seem to imply that the soundness of data treatment should be included in management diagnostics and development of the indexes of such soundness is needed.

    The series of revelations made by Edward Snowden revelations starting on 5th June 2013 exposed a true picture of state surveillance or, more precisely, surveillance conducted by an industrial-government complex in the democratic nations. His revelations have attracted heavy doses of both praise and censure; whereas some have positively evaluated his deed as an act of valour to protect democracy against the tyranny of the state, others have criticised him as a traitor to his country that have been preoccupied with responses to the threat of terrorism since the 9.11 attacks. Indeed, the US government filed charges of spying against him on 21st June, and he is forced to live in exile in Moscow. He said that only the American people could decide whether sacrificing his life was worth it by their response. The Pew Research Foundation found in a survey that although Americans are deeply split on whether Snowden&#039;s actions served or harmed the public interest, that younger groups regarded his actions as more beneficial than harmful when compared with older groups Inspired by the Pew Research Foundation&#039;s surveys, an international group of academics led by the authors of this paper have con

    The purpose of this article is to examine the contributions of applying of practice concepts to modeling of value co-creation. At first, two research topics relevant to value co-creation modeling were briefly reviewed. One was what leads value co-creation actions of customers and another was how value co-creations unite each other. After reviewing the practice concept and examining application of the concepts to these topics, following two contributions were revealed: by applying of practice concepts, customer behaviors in value co-creation could be explained in terms of socio-cultural aspects; by using the concepts such as bundles and complexes of practice, tight and loose connections among value co-creations can be identified. Finally implications of this study to the management diagnostics were considered.

    The purpose of this article is to explore the present status of value co-creation research through conceptual reviews of value co-creation that has recently received many attentions in the research area on management diagnosis. As a result of reviewing the existing research related to value co-creation, it was revealed that the two distinct concepts of value co-creation (i.e. selective value co-creation and essential value co-creation) have coexisted in what referred as a value co-creation. Moreover, results of the additional reviews on the these two value co-creation concepts with special attention to the perceptions of the roles of customer and learning aspects of value co-creation showed that the essential value co-creation is based on a novel relationship framework exceeding traditional role division of firm-customer relationships and can be conceptualized as a four-dimensional complex communication process. In the last section, some management diagnostic implications of this research were examined.

    In this study, characteristics of a predominant research framework on which many consumer inference researches have been based were reviewed, and problems of the research framework and future research directions were examined through contrast of characteristics of consumer inference that have been studied in the prior research framework and those of real consumer inference pictured by protocol data. As a result, it became clear that this prior framework has considered consumer inference as an information processing based only on characteristic attribute dimension. Also, in this framework, important information processing (such as selection of inferred attributes and formation of schema about inter-attribute relationships) has been regarded as ad hoc assumptions which are set by researchers. By reason of these characteristics, consumer inference examined in the framework has been excessive controlled inference making. To study creative aspects of consumer inference, extension of the concept, research area, and research methodologies on consumer inference must be made.

    This study deals with the social acceptance of the usage of wearable and/or implantable/insideable electronic devices for various purposes, especially for enjoying sports, in Japan as part of the cross-cultural study on cyborg ethics. Following the authors' previous work (Murata et al, 2017), qualitative study centred on semi-structured interviews with experts was conducted. Through the study, useful views, opinions and suggestions on the research of cyborg ethics were provided. In particular, the experts' expectations for and concerns about the emerging technologies in various contexts, which directly relate to human rights and dignity, were clarified.

    As reported in previous work (Adams et al. 2016) a survey of university students inspired by the Pew (Desilver 2014) survey on attitudes to Snowden's actions in revealing the surveillance of the US' NSA and the UK's GCHQ was carried out in multiple countries in late 2014 and early 2015.
    Surveys in Germany, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, New Zealand and Japan were carried out by academics in those countries while the core Japanese team deployed the survey additionally in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China. In addition to questions regarding knowledge of and attitudes to Snowden and government surveillance, the survey also asked respondents for their knowledge of and attitude to various issues of privacy. This talk will present statistical analyses and international comparisons of the answers to those questions.

    A revision to Japan's Act on Protection of Personal Information (APPI; Act No. 57 of 2003) was passed in September 2015. This act generally moved further in authorising the economic exploitation of personal information, rather than improving privacy protection. However, the revised act does include some restrictions on business operators' handling of sensitive personal data. The third paragraph of Article 2 of the revised act defines sensitive data not just via a list (such as the EU laws have) but more broadly as personal data with which extra care must be taken to avoid unjust discrimination, prejudice or other detriment against a data subject giving a non-exhaustive list including race, creed, social status, medical records, criminal records and damage suffered by crimes. However, data sensitivity is a new concept for ordinary Japanese people, and thus it may be hard for them to understand what types of personal data will be granted these extra protections.

    This study has yielded the following research findings. The first point is that attention should be given to the recursive process where the flow of use-context information not only enhances market adaptation of services but also transforms consumer behavior itself. The second point is that in such a recursive process, it became clear that consumers, while recognizing the importance of privacy risks, are forced to make decisions without being fully aware of them. The third point is the necessity of developing an analytical framework based on long-term and social relationships between companies and consumers in order to balance the benefits and risks brought by advanced marketing research.

    This cross-cultural research project has explored the conditions for the market acceptance and widespread use of cyborg technologies (wearable and implantable electronic devices for non-medical purposes), and provided suggestions on how companies should develop and use such technologies and on their marketing strategies. At the same time, it has elucidated the characteristics of ethical and social issues that the development and use of cyborg technologies can bring about, and proactively made policy recommendations to cope with those issues and realise good human existence, good corporate activities and a good society in the current technology environment where human mechanisation is progressing and technology, people, organisations and society are co-evolving. Much research work has been published, including four journal papers and eight book chapters.

    In this study, the following three main research results were obtained. First, consumers are in a more vulnerable position in ICT-developed marketing research, and such issues need to be analyzed in the long-term relationship between businesses and consumers. .. The second point is that there are structural characteristics such as contingency and reluctance to the consent that consumers make for corporate research activities. Applying several statistical analyses and text analysis methods to the data gathered by questionnaire surveys and follow-up interviews, following things were clarified in this study: information creation conducted by consumers is controlled by not only the cognitive process based on the logical thinking but also routinized behaviour patterns shared in a certain social community; and adoption of a research framework based on a social practice concept is beneficial in order to consider the above-mentioned dimension of consumer information creation. These findings provide meaningful implications for making the base of a multi-angled and comprehensive study on consumer information creation.
